Chapter 6

The street outside the block of flats was empty. It was the time of day when kids were at school, adults were at work and those without work had just tuned in to the first of the day’s Australian soap operas. There was no one to see Midge leap out of the air, pulling the Master after him by the lead round his neck.

Midge stood with his shoulders hunched, his face slack.

His eyes were still the eyes of a Cheetah Person but there was no savagery, no purpose of any kind left in him now.

He looked around in bewilderment. The Master did the same with an expression of deep distaste.

‘Where is this?’ asked the Master.

Midge shook his head as if to clear it. ‘Home,’ he said dazedly. He turned away, pulling his lead out of the Master’s hand. He started to wander towards the entrance to the flats.

The Master quickly looked round to see if they were observed and then followed.

Ace was walking slowly towards Karra, who dismounted and came to meet her. The others all began to retreat; only the Doctor stood his ground.

Ace looked into Karra’s hypnotic eyes. She could see her own reflection in their yellow mirror, a woman with cat’s eyes of her own.

‘Come hunting, sister,’ purred Karra.

Ace hesitated. Her whole instinct was to leap forward and join the Cheetah woman but something still held her back.

‘Ace, wait!’ The Doctor’s voice tugged at her memory.

She frowned, trying to remember. It was dangerous for her to join this strange woman, but why?

‘Come hunting,’ Karra purred again.

Ace looked into her golden eyes and forgot she had anything to worry about. She forgot everything except what it would be like to stretch every muscle running flat out across the plain. She smiled. She took a step forward.

‘No, Ace!’

She hardly heard the Doctor’s call. She saw Karra’s teeth bared in a grin; she saw Karra’s muscles rippling under her fur as she turned and leapt forward. Ace followed, feeling her legs swallowing the ground beneath her as she sped for the horizon behind the Cheetah woman, laughing from sheer pleasure.

‘Ace!’ Shreela called after her, running forward to join the Doctor. Together they watched as Ace and Karra receded. Only the sound of Ace’s laughter drifted back to them.

Shreela looked fearfully at the Doctor. ‘It’s happened hasn’t it? It’s happened to her. She’s changing.’

The Doctor stared at Ace, flying away from him across the plain. It didn’t seem possible that anything human could move so fast. ‘Yes,’ he said quietly, ‘she’s changed.’

‘Who’s next, eh? Who’s next?’ Paterson began to pace nervously. ‘If I had a gun…’

‘We’d be in even more trouble than we already are.’ The Doctor cut him off abruptly. ‘Right, stay here. I’ll go and find Ace.’

‘Now just a minute…’ Paterson began to bluster.

The Doctor turned a radiantly insincere smile on him. ‘I can leave you in charge, can’t I sergeant?’

Paterson frowned. ‘Well, if you put it like that.’

The Doctor turned to leave, winking broadly at Shreela.

She caught anxiously at his arm.
